He entered the Air Corps 7 January 1941 at Patterson Field, Fairfield OH, while living at Knox Co OH. At the time he had completee four years of high school and worked as a farm hand.

He attended Flight School training at the 59th AAFFTD Helena AR 1942, Class 43-D, and received his appointment as a Flight Officer 29 April 1943 at Turner Field, Albany GA, also Class 43-D.
