Reading Eagle-June 2, 1902-Celebrate Their Golden Anniversary-Mr. and Mrs. Ely Receive Many Congratulations-Gifts include Gold Pieces from Children, Grandchildren and Great-Grandchildren
Surrounded by their children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren Mr. and Mrs. David E. Ely, 1269 Cotton Street, celebrated their golden anniversary yesterday. Their home was beautifully decorated with Christmas bells and greens and presented a pretty appearance. A sumptuous banquet was served and music rendered by the Peerless Orchestra.
Mr. and Mrs. Ely received a large number of beautiful presents. Among them were $5 gold pieces from each of their children and grandchildren, and $1 gold pieces from each of their great-grandchildren. They also received articles of furniture, cut glass and chinaware.

Adams, Mrs. Harry Greenwood, Mr. and Mrs. Harry DeChamplain, Mr. and Mrs. Richard Rogers, Mr. and Mrs. Charles A. Mr. and Mrs. Ely were married 50 years ago by Rev. Keller, then pastor of St. James Lutheran, of which they are both life-long members. Mr. Ely is a native of this city but Mrs. Ely was born in Adamstown, Lancaster County. Before her marriage she was Miss Elizabeth Steiner. Both are hale and hearty for their ages, and are active.
Seven children have blessed their union, four of which are still living. Mrs. Angelina Frick, Mrs. Maggie Spotts, Mrs. Sadie Fisher, and Issac H. Ely. They have 19 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Learns Trade as Boat Calker
Mr. Ely has been employeed about Trinity Lutheran Cemetery for the last 18 years and at present is sexton. He learned the trade of a boat calker early in life and served at that occupation for many years. When the rebellion broke out he enlisted, and after his first term of enlistment expired, enlisted again. He served two years in all. During his second enlistment he was disabled before his term expired and was honorably discharged.
Christens Two Grandchildren
In connection with the wedding anniversary there was a double christening. The children christened were Raymond Jacob, son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Spotts, and Frank H. Fischer, son of Mr. and Mrs. Frank H. Fischer. Both are grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. Ely. The ceremony was performed by Rev. F. H. Huntzinger, pastor of St. Luke's Lutheran Church. At the conclusion, he made a few well chosen remarks.

Veteran Passes Away-Demise of David E. Ely-Was Seriously injured at Bull Run
David E. Ely, veteran of the Civil War, died of old age and general debility at 10 p.m. Tuesday at the residence of his son-in-law, Frank H. Fischer, 535 South Fifteenth Street, aged 78 years 11 months and 26 days. Deceased was bedfast three months.
Mr. Ely was one of the oldest members of St. James Lutheran Church. For 14 years years he was sexton at Trinity Lutheran cemetery. Forty years ago he served as a patrolman under Mayor Mayer.
Deceased during his youth learned the carpenter trade and for many years was employed as a boat builder. Later, for 15 years, he served as a boatman, operating on the Union canal. At the outbreak of the Civil War, he enlisted in the Eighty-eighth Regiment Pennsylvania Volunteers. In the battle of Bull Run, he was seriously injured and after a prolonged illness, was given an honorable discharge and returned to his home.
Besides his widow, Elizabeth (nee Steiner), he leaves these children: Mrs. Angeline Hoffman, Mrs. Edward Spotts, Sadie, wife of Frank H. Fischer, and one son, Isaac Ely. Eighteen grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren also survive. Deceased was the last of his family.
