WILLIAMSBURG - Winifred "Winnie" V. Powell, 102, passed away Oct. 17, 2009, at the Hospice House of Williamsburg.

Winnie was born in Elbert County, Ga., and she spent her adult years as a home maker and full-time mom in Hampton.

Winnie spent her last years living in Williamsburg with her daughter and son-in-law.

She lived a long and healthy life and was still working crossword puzzles, in ink, up to the last few weeks of her life. It's amazing to think that she was able to witness man's first flight, man's first walk on the moon, and the myriad of changes in our world over the last century.

She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters. Her loving husband of 51 years, Wilbert (Dick), passed away July, 1995.

Winnie is survived by her daughter, Mary Ann Metts and son-in-law, Perry; and two granddaughters, Jenna Metts and Leah Metts-Houseknecht and her husband, Drew. She is also survived by a brother, James Vickery; and sister, Martha Hewell.
