Episcopalian. Member, American Bar Association; American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Phi Beta Kappa; Freemasons; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 1919 he married Margaret Randolph (Anderson) Rotch, the widow of a Harvard professor. They lived at 182 Beacon St. They divorced in 1932.
