Served in the U.S. Army during World War I; lawyer; delegate to Republican National Convention from Massachusetts, 1928, 1936; member of Massachusetts state senate Third Suffolk District, 1929-36; candidate for mayor of Boston, Mass., 1933; candidate for U.S. Senator from Massachusetts, 1940; colonel in the U.S. Army during World War II. Episcopalian. Member, American Bar Association; American Academy of Arts and Sciences; Phi Beta Kappa; Freemasons; American Legion; Veterans of Foreign Wars.

In 1919 he married Margaret Randolph (Anderson) Rotch, the widow of a Harvard professor. They lived at 182 Beacon St. They divorced in 1932.
