Mrs. Ella Marie Schermerhorn,
wife of E. B. Schermerhorn, presi-
dent of the Citizens Bank, died at
Jane Chinn hospital in Webb City, at
4:30 oclock Thursday afternoon.

Mrs. Schermerhorn underwent an
operation at the hospital last Friday
morning. Her condition was rapidly
improving until Tuesday when she
developed pneumonia which resulted
in her death.

Mrs. Ella Marie Brace Schermer-
horn was born November 17, 1877.
She moved from that place to Fort
Scott, Kansas, where she graduated
from the public schools and later
taught in the schools there several
years. She then went to Reno, Nev.,
where she again taught in the public
schools. About fifteen years ago
she moved to Eureka Springs, Ark.,
where she was married to C. M. Sum-
ner, who passed away about five
years ago. She was again married,
Novemeber 19, 1919, to Mr. E. B.
Schermerhorn of this city.

Mrs. Schermerhorn was an accom-
plished vocalist and devoted much of
her time to the study of music. Her
pleasing personality won many dear
friends who are indeed saddened by
her unexpected death.

She is survived by her husband, E.
B. Schermerhorn; her mother, Mrs.
S. A. Brace, one brother, Harold
Brace, both of Reno, Nevada; and
one sister, Mrs. J. F. Casner of Ga-
lena.

Funeral services will probably be
held Monday. Arrangements will be
completed upon the arrival of the
mother and brother who are enroute
to Galena.

residence Monday afternoon at 2
oclock. The Reverend J. W. Hart, of
the Presbyterian church of Baxter
Springs officiated, assisted by the
Reverend E. E. Hollar of the local
Methodist Episcopal church. Inter-
ment was in the Schermerhorn mosa-
leum in Mt. Hope Cemetery, near
Webb City.

The acting pallbearers were: L. J.
Haines, John McCullagh, H. H. Hub-
bard, C. L. Sawyer, Albert Schmidt,
Floyd Robeson, James Morin and E.
J. Murdock.

Abbie was the first entombed in the Schermerhorn Mausoleum. However obviously their mausoleum was not completed when Abbie passed as she was first entombed on 12/26/1915 in the Rogers Mausoleum & then removed and entombed in the Schermerhorn on 08/26/1916. My information shows that she had the disease "gastritis" and that she had a bronze casket. So apparently their mausoleum was constructed between 01/1916 & 08/1916.

Notes: Came to Baxter Springs, Kansas in 1875. Twice married, first on November 21, 1878 to Miss Abbie Brown Simpson, she died December 23, 1915. He married Ella Brace Sumner on November 19, 1919, she died on January 18, 1923.

Mr. Shermerhorn, was by all accounts a very successful business man, rated as being a millionaire. Both Governors Hoch and Stubbs appointed him to special boards. The home he started to build in 1891 is "now listed on the National Register of Historic Places". Mr. Schermerhorn, is reported to have been a very generous and caring individual, giving to the less fortunate and many charities. He also donated 22 acres of land, in 1922, to the city of Galena to be used for a city park. The park was named Schermerhorn Park.
