Jacob was a Jacksonville, Hollister and Glouster coal miner who immigrated from Elversberg, Germany in 1893. He was joined by his wife Elizabeth and their seven children a year later. Two more children were born in Ohio.

Jacob is said to have had French aristocratic grandparents, who sold their title and moved to Germany. His daughter Elizabeth told of having accompanied her father to visit wealthy relatives in Paris before he left for America. His granddaughter described him as quite a handsome man who always wore a goatee, and the children were all very much in awe of him.
