Jacob was a Glouster, Ohio, coal miner, the son of Jacob and Elizabeth Schwalbach, who came to America as an infant in 1894. Even though he and most of his family were born in Germany, he served in the US Army in WW1. At the age of 25 he enlisted, on May 26, 1918, at Athens, Ohio, and served as a Private in the 158th Depot Brigade, Camp Sherman, Ohio, until his honorable discharge on December 1, 1918, thirteen days after Armistice Day. His service number was 2482011.

Jacob lived for a time in Akron, Ohio, per the 1920 census. His life was cut short when his auto rolled over into a Buchtel, Ohio, water-filled ditch and he was drowned. He was survived by his second wife Lillian (Zyrd) Schwalbach.
His first wife was Hilda (Shaffer) Schwalbach.
