~~~ My 4th Great Grand Uncle ~~~
William Lawrence Locklin, born in Milledgeville, Baldwin Co., GA - Son of Samuel "William" Locklin Sr & Agniss/Nancy Stevenson/Stinson.
Brother of Samuel, Nancy, Martha "Patsy" and John Locklin.
William married, 31 May 1798 in Columbia Co., GA, Mary Foster. After the death of Mary on 31 Oct 1825, William married, 7 Jan 1827 in Monroe Co., AL, Amelia Wheeler, a daughter of Charles Wheeler.
*Children of William and Mary, if any, unknown at this time.
However, it is believed that William and Mary had at least 2 children by 1816 (1 male, 1 female) as his household was enumerated in the Mississippi, State and Territorial Census Collection, 1792-1866 as follows:
Name: William Locklin
Census Date: 1816
County: Baldwin
LINE: 79
Roll: v229_1
White Male Over 21 years: 1
White Male Under 21 years: 1
White Female Over 21 years: 1
White Female Under 21 years: 1
Total of White Inhabitants: 4
Total of Free People of Colour: 0
Total of Slaves: 2
Total of Inhabitants: 6
Note: 1816 Citizens of Baldwin County, Mississippi Territory
Baldwin County, Mississippi Territory, was created on December 21, 1809, from the southern part of Washington County, Mississippi Territory. It was bordered by Washington County and Spanish West Florida.
Once Alabama became a state, the Baldwin County of the Mississippi Territory was divided between Mobile and Washington Counties. The present-day Baldwin County was then formed from the part of Mobile County east of Mobile Bay.
Keeping this in mind, the residents of the modern Baldwin County in 1816 could be found in the census of Baldwin or Mobile County.
William's residence was in a part of Mobile County.
Father of (by Amelia) Capt Charles William Sr, Sarah Jane, Samuel and Coolidge Locklin.
Grandson of William Lachland and Jane Cook of Scotland.
William died in Claiborne, Monroe Co., AL.
*The 1830 Monroe Co., AL Census enumerating William Locklin as follows:
1 m - under 5 (Charles William Locklin Sr);
1 m - 15-20 (unknown, possible son of 1st marriage);
1 m - 30-40 (unknown, possible son of 1st marriage);
1 m - 50-60 (William Lawrence Locklin);
1 f - under 5 (Sarah Jane Locklin);
1 f - 20-30 (Amelia Wheeler Locklin).
It is not proven, but likely, the 2 males listed in age categories 15-20 and 30-40 are sons of William and Mary Foster Locklin. Their names are not known at this time. There was a female under the age of 21 enumerated in William's household in 1816. By the 1830 Census, she was not enumerated. Without further information, she could be assumed to have married by 1830 or was deceased.
