He enlisted with Company G of the 15th Virginia Infantry on April 22, 1861 at Camp Hill. He entered as a sergeant, was elected lieutenent and promoted to captain. He recieved a shell wound, fracturing his scapula on May 16, 1864 at Drewry's Bluff. He was absent wounded until December of 1864, when he was detailed as historian of the regiment.
