In 1539, he was named papal legate to re-establish the peace between the emperor and Francois I of France. It was through his mediation that the two sovereigns met in Paris in 1544. A patron of literature, art, and science, he commissioned Vignola to construct Il Gesù, the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, and the Villa Farnese in Caprarola.
