Clergy. He was born in Rome as the eldest son of Pier Luigi Farnese, Duke of Parma and Girolama Orsini. His paternal grandfather Paul III, who had recently become pope, created him a cardinal at the age of fourteen in December 1534. After a year, he was named vice-chancellor of the church, a position he held until his death. In 1539, he was named papal legate to re-establish the peace between the emperor and Francois I of France. It was through his mediation that the two sovereigns met in Paris in 1544. A patron of literature, art, and science, he commissioned Vignola to construct Il Gesù, the Palazzo Farnese in Rome, and the Villa Farnese in Caprarola.
