The son of Benjamin & Mary (Moore) Neron, in 1860, he was a laborer living in Cumberland County. He stood 5' 10" tall and had dark hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in Centerville, Cumberland County, August 25, 1864, mustered into federal service September 3 as a private with Co. F, 207th Pennsylvania Infantry, and honorably discharged with his company May 31, 1865.

After the war, he married Mary Ann Naugle and fathered William Jacob (b. 02/05/67).
