Edward was a tinsmith and coal miner. He served in the Civil War, elisting for three years on 24 Aug 1861. Among the battles in which he participated as a private in the 5th U.S. Artillery, Battery F, were Seven Days, Antietam, Fredericksburg, Gettysburg (in reserve), and the Siege of Petersburg, during which his enlistment expired and he was discharged.

Rode for the Pony Express in Nebraska for a time.

Married Charlotte "Lottie" Hoffman in 1869 and had two children, Jennie and John Howard.
