Anna ("Eliza") was a Civil War-widow at age 18 after her first husband, William Van Horn, a private in the 129th PA Infantry, died of smallpox in Washington, D.C., just five weeks after he enlisted. They had no children. Four years later, at age 22, she married William Stillwagner and had nine children by him: Sarah, Cora, John, Olie, Anna, Charles, Calvin, Ralph, and Robert.
