Columbus Banta Sudden
Victim of Heart Ailment

Death last Saturday removed a highly respected resident of this community and one who had made his home in Calistoga for nearly 53 years, Columbus D. Banta.

After having been in poor health since last fall, Mr. Banta was taken critically ill with a heart ailment about two weeks ago. He was removed to the St. Helena Sanitarium and for a time seemed to improve, until death struck very suddenly.

Came Here in 1891

Columbus Banta was born in Nicholas, Sutter county, California, 68 years ago. As a small boy, he left there and went with his parents to reside in Sacramento for a time. It was in September of 1891 that he came to Calistoga, and he had lived here ever since. After coming to this valley, he farmed for a time, and then went into the building business, in which he had been associated, for the 25 year prior to his death, with Harry W. Coulter. The illness which struck last fall brought about his retirement, and he had not worked since.

Mr. Banta’s first wife, who was Miss Bertha Jones before her marriage, passed away about four years ago, and he had since married Mrs. Alice Brown, who survives him. Other relatives who mourn his passing are three sisters, Mrs. Evelyn Wolleson of Calistoga, Mrs. Octavia Brown of Calistoga, and Mrs. Erma Scott of Oakland; and these nieces and nephew: Beatrice Dunphy of Milbrae; Thelma wright of Oakland and Calistoga, Lois Enholm of San Antonio, Texas, and Lieut. William Brown of the U.S. Army Air Corps.

The funeral was held Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. from the Simic Funeral Home in Calistoga, with Elder Nelson of the St. Helena Sanitarium conducting the service. Pallbearers were W.W. Kortum, Emil Rockstroh, Charles Tamagni, and L.E. Light. Interment took place in the Calistoga cemetery.
