Katelin Michele Sawyer (Voshell), 14 year old resident of Onamia, MN passed away on Friday, September 7, 2012 in Onamia, MN. Funeral arrangements are pending with the Shelley Funeral Chapel of Onamia. Katelin was born on October 5, 1997 in Austin, MN to Kris and Gary Voshell. She moved to Albert Lea, MN in March of 1998. Her sister, Kaycee was born there. Katelin attended school in Albert Lea for two years. The family moved to Onamia in January of 2005, where her brother, Jamie was born. She was active in volleyball, and loved fishing. Katelin was really looking forward to her first deer hunting trip. She also loved hanging out with friends, and cousins. Her current goal was to get her drivers license. Katelin is survived by her parents, Kris and Gary; sister, Kaycee; brother, Jamie; maternal grandparents, Michele and Mike Morehouse; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. Katelin was preceded in death by her paternal grandparents, James and Doris Voshell; and great-grandparents. She will be sadly missed. We love you "KK-Charlie".

Teen girl killed walking to football game in Onamia, Minn.
ONAMIA TOWNSHIP, Minn. -
A 14-year-old girl and Onamia High School student was struck from behind and killed by a vehicle while walking near U.S. Highway 169 and 125th Avenue Friday night, reports the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office.
The crash took place at 7:14 p.m. Friday on 350th Street in Onamia Township as victim Katelin Sawyer was reportedly on her way to watch a football game at the Onamia school. The driver, identified as Michal Kunesh, 37, of rural Onamia stopped and notified authorities of the crash from the scene.
An off-duty Mille Lacs County Deputy and a Mille Lacs Health System EMT were on the same road while also heading to the football game. Both stopped and administered first aid to Sawyer at the scene. She was rushed by ambulance to the Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia, where she died.
The accident is still under investigation by the Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor in the crash.

A former Albert Lea youth who was struck and killed while walking to a high school football game last Friday is being remembered as a friendly, bubbly teenager with a kind heart.
Katelin Sawyer, 14, was walking to an Onamia High School football game from a convenience store with three other friends when she was reportedly struck from behind by a car, according to her grandmother, Michele Morehouse. The other three teenagers were not injured.
A Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office news release states the driver of the car has been identified as Michael Kunesh, 38, of rural Onamia. After striking Katelin, Kunesh reportedly stopped and notified authorities of the crash.
Katelin was ultimately transported by ambulance to the Mille Lacs Hospital in Onamia where she later died.
The Mille Lacs County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol are continuing to investigate the crash. Alcohol does not appear to be a factor.
Morehouse said the entire community of Onamia has pulled together to support the family. Some students at the school are making bracelets in memory of Katelin, and the girls' volleyball team planned to wear green shoelaces in honor of the teenager at the Tuesday game. Green was her favorite color.
They were also having green shirts made with her picture.
Morehouse said Katelin was an avid volleyball player for Onamia High School and loved to fish. She was looking forward to going deer hunting for the first time this fall and was anticipating getting her driver's license.
The daughter of Kris and Gary Voshell, Katelin moved from Albert Lea to Onamia when she was about 7 1/2. She has a 12-year-old sister, Kaycee, and a 6-year-old brother, Jamie.
Morehouse said her granddaughter was a good friend to many other girls her age and was a good listener. Her family was also important to her.
Lisa Morehouse, one of Katelin's aunts, said she will remember Katelin's smile and hugs.
"Every time we pulled into the driveway to visit, she was the first out of the house with a giant smile and hugs for everyone," she said. "She was a kind-hearted individual that would give you the shirt off her back if you needed it."
A service will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Albert Lea, with a visitation one hour prior to the service at the church, 501 S. Washington Ave.

Volleyball team returns to court after tragic loss of player
ONAMIA, Minn. (KMSP) -
On Tuesday night, the high school volleyball team in Onamia, Minn., returned to the court just days after a tragic accident claimed the life of a beloved player who was struck by a vehicle and killed while walking on a rural road with friends.
The girls, who were fighting through tears, were lifted by an outpouring of support from their small, tight-knit community that came from the packed bleachers.
Even though it was hard for Katelin Sawyer's teammates to return to the action without No. 4 by their side, the sea of fans wearing green and posters of support showed the Panthers entered the match with a mission in mind.
"We're going to kick butt tonight," Kayla LoBejko predicted. "We're going to win. For her, we're going to win."
In the end, the Panthers did ride their wave of emotions to a four-set victory while members of Sawyer's family -- including her father -- watched and cheered them as they took their first steps on the long road to healing.
The match began with a heart-felt tribute and a moment of silence to remember the 14-year-old freshman, who died just four days before while she was on the way to the Onamia High School football game. Witnesses and authorities call the crash a tragic accident, saying a blinding setting sun is likely to blame.
"Just a tremendous tragedy," said Larry Ronglien, principal of Onamia High School. "Can't imagine what the family is going through with this. Just tragedy, all the way around."
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday afternoon at the school. Classes will be dismissed a couple of hours early so that students and teachers can say their last goodbyes.
