Gaylord L. Baxter was born on June 18, 1925 in Austin, Minnesota the son of Earl L. and Mary A. (Schaefer) Baxter. He died on Wednesday, January 20, 1999 at the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in Estelline at the age of 73 years.

Gaylord spent his early years and received his education in Austin, MN and attended the Austin High School. He then served in the U.S. Navy. He was united in marriage to Constance E. Brooks on August 24, 1946 in Austin. He was employed as a taxi driver in Austin for a short time before working for the Milwaukee Railroad for several years. Gaylord was then employed at Hormel Meat Packing for 30 years retiring in 1982. He moved to Estelline, SD in November of 1994. Constance died on January 18, 1995 in Rochester, MN. Gaylord entered the Estelline Nursing and Care Center in October of 1998.

He was a member of the Austin Retrievers Club, the Cedar Valley Conservation Club, the Izaak Walton League, Fire Arms Safety instructor, the VFW Post #1216, and the local P9 Labor Union of Austin. Gaylord worked for many years at the Fish and Game display at Mower County Fair Grounds in Austin. He especially enjoyed fishing in Canada, Alaska and many other Minnesota Lakes, as well as hunting big game in Finland and Pine City Minnesota and near his home town. He also was a big believer in giving blood and he did so when ever he could.

Gaylord is survived by six daughters, Sherry Wells of Lansing, MN., Susan Engler, Lynne Shada, Michele Morehouse, and her husband Michael all of Austin, MN., Marcy Fox and her husband Frank of Waldorf, MN., Lorry Nystrom, and her husband Jeff of Estelline, SD., one son, Micheal Baxter, and his wife Kim of Austin, MN., 30 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, two brothers, Richard Baxter, and his wife Marian, Floyd Baxter, and his wife Edith all of Austin, MN., one sister, Dorothy Barber of Charles City, Iowa and lifetime friends, Frank and Betty Haustein of Lansing, MN.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, four sisters, Hazel, Marcella, Ardith and special friend, Jean Maurer.
