James met his wife Mahalia Clara Taylor on the Cherokee Indian Reservation in eastern Oklahoma. In February, 1879, they crossed into the adjacent Missouri County of Butler where they were married.
After their eldest son was born, they moved to Texas where the rest of their children were born in Milam and Leon Counties.
