Mahalia Clara Taylor was born in Haywood County, TN. Family stories indicated she was the daughter of a Cherokee woman and Unknown Taylor, an Englishman. She was born in Tennessee and at some point was relocated to the Cherokee Indian Reservation in Oklahoma. She lived there until her marriage.

On February 11, 1879, she and James William Stewart (b. July, 1860 – d. 1924) crossed into the border county of Butler, Missouri where they were married. After the birth of their eldest son, James R. Stewart, b. 13 Oct. 1879, they moved to Milam County Texas. The rest of their children were born in Texas in Milam and Leon counties where they owned a ranch.
