William enlisted in the Confederate States Army on 29 February 1864 in Columbia, Richland County, South Carolina and mustered as a private in CompanyA, 19th South Carolina Infantry. He was wounded, gunshot (cannonball) fracture of left tibia, on 15 December 1864 at Nashville, Tennessee and taken as a prisoner of war to U.S. General Hospital No. 1 in Nashville, Tennessee for treatment. The hospital noted that he was 44 years old. William was transferred from the hospital to the Provost Marshall on 17 January 1865 and transferred to Louisville, Kentucky. He arrived on 18 January 1865 and then was transferred to Camp Chase Confederate Prison in Ohio. He arrived at Camp Chase on 20 January 1865. William died at the prison on 15 February 1865 of pneumonia.
