Sister Dunstan Delehant
(July 30, 1918 - September 17, 1971)

The Atchison Daily Globe (KS) – Pages 1, 9 – Friday, September 17, 1971:

Sister Dunstan Delehant, 53, died at 8:45 a.m. today in the Mount St. Scholastica convent infirmary after an extended illness. She had been forced to relinquish her college classes within the past year.

For 20 years Sister Dunstan was a popular teacher of philosophy at Mount St. Scholastica College in Atchison, KS. She had served as head of the department and was instrumental in effecting unification of the departments of theology and philosophy in preparation for the merger of Mount St. Scholastica and St. Benedict's colleges.

Known to the students also as a residence-hall director and as faculty adviser to the Mount Mirror, student newspaper, Sister Dunstan had many friends among the alumnae of Mount St. Scholastica college. Testimonial to this fact came in the form of the Offeramus Medal in 1969, an honor granted by the Mount alumnae to their more distinguished members.

Having joined the religious community at the Mount in 1937, Sister Dunstan made her profession of vows on Jan. 1, 1939. Since that time she has served as a teacher in the schools of St. Joe, and Seneca, as well as Lillis High school in Kansas City, MO.

To prepare for her college teaching career, Sister Dunstan gained her doctorate in philosophy from Catholic University of America, joining the faculty at the Mount as an instructor in 1950. Typical of Sister Dunstan's dedication to the college was her choice in 1970 to work with the summer planning committee of the two colleges moving toward unification.

A similar dedication to work for the future of her religious community was evidenced by the initiative and energy and leadership Sister Dunstan contributed in the form of a community "congress" in the summers of 1969 and 1970. An out-growth of this two-year experience is the current community senate, which has been accepted as part of the governmental structure of the Mount community of Benedictine Sisters.

Daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Delehant of Omaha, Virginia Delehant was born July 30, 1918, in Beatrice, Neb. She was educated in the Mount Academy and College, receiving her A.B. degree in 1934.

She is survived also by two brothers, John W. Delehant, Jr., Omaha, NE and Maurice Delehant, Los Angeles, CA.

A vigil service for Sister Dunstan will be held in the St. Scholastica chapel on Sunday at 8 p.m. The funeral is scheduled for 5 p.m. Monday. Both the vigil and the funeral services are open to the public. The Harouff-Arensberg Mortuary is in charge of arrangements. Burial will be in the convent cemetery.
