Thomas enlisted with John F. Lay's Company of Cavalry on 25 April 1861. Lay was captain of Company E of the Fourth Regiment of Virginia Cavalry, The Powhatan Troop. Depp was detailed to do extra duty, assisting Captain Lay. In March of 1863, he was sent back to Powhatan to get horses. In September of 1863, his rank was shown as Second Corporal.
