Son of Jacob Edgerton and Narcissa H. Gregory.

"William was mustered into the 1st Vermont Inf., Co. K on May 9, 1861 with the rank of 1st Sergeant. He was mustered out on August 15, 1861, at which time he was commissioned as Captain in the 11th U.S. Infantry. He was promoted to Brevet Major April 2, 1865 for gallant services in the field at Petersburg. He transferred to the 29th U.S. Infantry on Sept. 21, 1866 and retired from the Army on Nov. 2, 1867."
