Delbert Dale Denney 1921-2014

Delbert Dale Denney was born August 3, 1921 in the Freezeout Saddle area of Imnaha, in Wallowa county, Oregon. The oldest of three children born to Cread C. Denney and Doris Esther (Lansing) Denney.

His paternal grandparents were Geroge Washington Denney and Annie Druzilla (Marks) Denney.

His maternal grandparents were Chester Ira Lansing and Maude Edna (Hugoboom) Lansing.

Delbert's siblings include one brother, Robert Cread Denney, Sr. and one sister, Cora Mae (Denney) O'Connor.

He attended Enterprise High School, graduating in 1941. He received a football scholarship to Gonzaga University, and attended college there until December 1942 when he entered the U.S. Navy after the attack at Pearl Harbor. His military training took place in both the Navy and Marine Corps as a medical corpsman. During World War II his military service encompassed the Pacific theater, from the Aleutian Islands to the South Pacific and what is now Viet Nam. He was in the first wave landing during the battle of Iwo Jima.

At the conclusion of the war, he returned to Enterprise and began working for a local gas and oil distributor. He later became the distributor for the Richfield Oil Co., now known as ARCO.

Delbert married Delores "Dee" Miller on July 9, 1945 in Milwaukie, Clackamas county, Oregon. They became the parents to three children, including Jana Lynne Denney.

He and wife Delores built the Ponderosa Motel and the ARCO service station, both located across from the Wallowa County Courthouse.

A lifelong athlete, avid golfer and tennis player; he coached many Wallowa Valley Little League and Babe Ruth baseball teams. He was a charter and life member of Enterprise Elks Lodge #1829, a member of V.F.W. Eagle Cap Post #4307 and the Enterprise Golf Course.

Delbert passed away May 17, 2014 in St. Helens, Columbia county, Oregon, at the age of 92 years old.

He was laid to rest next to his wife in the Eagle Point National Cemetery with full military honors.
