When it became apparent that the USA would sooner or later become involved in WWII, he volunteered into the U.S. Navy with service #2956113 and served as a Seaman 2nd Class.
In 1942 he was aboard the USS Vincennes when it battled with a Japanese warship in the Solomon Islands area. His ship sank and he went missing, lost at sea, presumed dead. He was the first Maury Countian to be killed in WWII.
His name appears on the Manila American Memorial located in Fort Bonafacio (formerly known as Fort William McKinley) in Manila, Philippines which contains the graves of 17,202 service men plus 36,285 on the Tablets of the Missing.
