Virginia Norine Shannon Appleby Frink, 87, of 1580 Matterhorn Dr. NE, died Monday, February 2, 2009, in St. Luke's Hospital following a long illness.

Virginia was born on March 19, 1921, in Nichols, Iowa to Harry Eugene and Amanda Emma Rummells Shannon.

She graduated from West High in Waterloo, Iowa, in 1939 and received a teaching certificate from the University of Northern Iowa. She taught schools in Coggon and Wilton Junction.

She married George Kenneth Appleby on January 14, 1945 in Waterloo. They lived in Klamath Falls, Oregon, Springfield, Illinois, and Cedar Rapids, Iowa. Two sons survive, Robert Michael (Patricia) Appleby of Parker, Colorado, and David Patrick (Ann) of Magnolia, Texas. George Appleby died in an airplane accident on December 9, 1971.

She married Robert Frink on August 30, 1975 in Cedar Rapids, where they have lived, and who survives.

She is also survived by two step sons Robert (Nita) Frink Jr. of Rock Island, Illinois, and Stephen (Barbara) Frink of Key Largo, Florida, a sister Elaine (Gene) Train of Clearwater, Florida, grandchildren are, Lori (Ryan) Sinclair, Tera Appleby, Sarah (Duane) Thompson, Brenda (Steve) Tyler, Mollye (Keith) Taylor, Brandon Murray, Ian (Monique) Frink, and Alexa G. Frink, 14 great grandchildren, and numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, nieces, and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, and a step daughter Theresa Frink.

Memorial services will be held at 10:30 AM Thursday in St. Paul's United Methodist Church. Rev. Harlan Gillespie and Rev Lloyd Brockmeyer will officiate. Friends may call at the church from 9:30 to service time on Thursday. Inurnment in Cedar Memorial Park Chapel of Memories Mausoleum.
