Civil War: Company B, 7th California Infantry

George C. Ashurst enlisted as a private at the Presidio of San Francisco March 28, 1865, and was mustered into Company B, 7th California Infantry, March 29. Private Ashurst was posted to Arizona Territory. He returned to California and was mustered out with his company at the Presidio of San Francisco April 26, 1866 (Orton, 771). George married Mary Jane (maiden name unknown). George filed for a Civil War veteran's pension August 4, 1890, and received application No. 859,020 and certificate No. 623,712. He was admitted to the National Soldiers' Home at Sawtelle, California, May 28, 1896, and had two extended absences at his own request. When admitted he indicated he was a married laborer from Mendota, California. George's home record shows his next-of-kin as his brother, John Ashurst, of Hollister, San Benito County, California. George died at Sawtelle of stomach cancer. Mary filed for a widow's pension June 2, 1924, and received application No. 1,220,130.
