Mary Elizabeth was the tenth and last child of Elizabeth A. and Samuel Gish. Mary was about 13 years of age when Sam and wife Ella, along with Mary's two brothers Kenneth and Charles moved from the farm west of Abilene, Kansas to Santa Ana, California. Mary married Elmer Gus Austerman on August 21, 1942 in Las Vegas, Neveda. They had two children, a daughter Linda and a son John.
