Laura May Gish was the first child of Samuel Milton and Elizabeth Adeline Smith Gish of Pennsylvania. After moving to Kansas with her family in the early 1900s she is the only one in the family to live out her life in Kansas. She married Andrew Jackson Houlton on May 23, 1917 in Solomon, KS and they had four children, Arlene V., Dorothy L., Helen M., and David L. Laura and Andrew raised Laura's sister's girl, JoAnn.
Laura and Andrew owned and operated Houlton's Market on South Cedar Street in Abilene for many years prior to their retirement.
