Charles Raymond Schmett, 76, of Beecher, Ill., died May 7, 2004, at Anchorage Nursing Home in Beecher.
He was born Dec. 15, 1927, in Somerville, Ind., the son of Madia Meir and Christian H. A. Schmett.
Mr. Schmett was Superintendent of Schools at Momence, Ill., from 1973 to 1983. He was also Superintendent at Allendale, Ill., 1964-1968, and Beecher City, Ill., 1968-1973. He was a professional educator for 32 years.
He was also a basketball fan who played on the only Mackey, Ind., High School team that ever won a state district tourney title. He later coached the Griffin, Ind., High School team to its only district tourney championship.
He was a World War II veteran who served two years in the United States Army Transportation Corp, Yokohama, Japan. Schmett was a graduate of Oakland City College, Oakland City, Ind. He received his Masters degree and completed post-graduate work at Indiana University.
Mr. Schmett was a 32nd Degree Mason and a member of the Scottish Rite Lodge, Danville, Ill. He was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ, Beecher, Ill., and the Beecher Amvets Lodge. He was a member of the Illinois Association of School Administrators.
Survivors include his wife, Maurine, of Beecher; son, Kim D. (Connie) Schmett of Clive, Iowa; sister, Betty (Ersey) Auten of Winslow, Ind.; two step-grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his first wife, Ruth Laverne Cromer and sisters Delores (William) Sevier and Eileen Benton.
Services will be held Tuesday, May 11, at 11 a.m. at Hack Funeral Home in Beecher, Ill. Burial will be held at Skyline Memorial Park in Monee.
Friends may call from 3 to 9 p.m. today (Monday) at the funeral home.
