Professor Jorge Luis Divino passed away on Sunday, 4/25/99. He was born on 11/14/1909, in Havana, Cuba. In 1942, he married Ana Ortiz in Havana.

He received a bachelor`s degree in architecture from Georgia Institute of Technology, a second bachelor`s degree in architecture from the University of Havana & a master`s degree in architecture from Princeton University where he also did post-master`s work. In the summer of 1935 he did an internship with Richard Neutra.

He had a very successful architectural practice in Cuba that included residences, schools & churches. A number of his buildings received national recognition. Also he taught at the University of Havana & the University of Villanova. In 1960 he arrived to TX & served as a professor in the School of Architecture at the University of TX at Austin for 20 years & then was appointed Professor Emeritus.

He was a recipient of honors & awards including the Teaching Excellence Award from the Student Association, the Cactus Award, & The Student Government of the School of Architecture Award. In 1981 El Colegio de Arquitectos de Cuba en el Exilo presented to him an award for being an outstanding professor & for his excellence in the practice in the field of architecture.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ana Ortiz. He was preceded in death by a daughter, Cecilia Divino in 1996.

He is survived by two daughters, Dr. Ana D. Cleveland of Denton & Carmen Prodoehl of Houston, a son, Louis D. Divino of Austin and a son-in-law, Dr. Donald B. Cleveland. Three grandsons also survive him, Austin L. Divino of Austin, Paul Jerome Prodoehl & David A. Prodoehl, of Houston. Also he is survived by a sister, Emma Divino of Havana, Cuba, and a sister-in-law, Mrs. Pedro Cue & her children, of Austin. In addition, Professor Divino leaves behind many former students & friends.

He was a beloved & devoted husband & father. He affectively touched the lives of his students & inspired them to achieve excellence in their profession.

A rosary will be held on Tuesday, 4/27/99 @ 7 p.m. @ the Weed-Corley-Fish Funeral Home. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, 4/28/99 @ 11 a.m. @ the funeral home with Rev. Father Jerry A. Smith officiating

Memorials may be made to the Jorge Luis Divino Centennial Scholarship @ the School of Architecture @ the University of TX at Austin.
