Johannes was born to Ole Olsen Kjolset and Helene Christiansdatter at Ostre Toten, Norway. He married Johane Jensdatter Lie on 7 April 1845 at Ester Toten, Norway. The couple had two daughters (Christena Olson Nelson and Helen Olson Olson 1845-1932) when they emigrated to the United States, departing Christiania, Norway on 2 May 1850. They arrived in Muskego, Wisconsin the first part of August and went on foot to Neenah, Wisconsin. They settled on a farm near Winchester, Winnebago County, Wisconsin. The couple added three more daughters and two sons there: Maria Olson Hennum (1850-1928), Martin Olson (1852-1924), Ole J. (1854-1941), Clara Olson Peterson (1856-1946), and Josephine Olson Johnson (1857-1941). Johannes enlisted in the Civil War at Winchester, Wisconsin, on 31 August 1864 in Battery C, First Wisconsin Heavy Artillery. He was 41 years old. He was honorably discharged at Fort Lyon, VA on 26 June 1865. Since the family owed for their transportation from Norway, they sold their farm in the spring of 1869 and came by covered wagon to settle on a farm near Albaton, Monona County, Iowa.
