Award: Mariner's Medal
Address of Record: Baltimore, Maryland
On the evening of Feb 6, 1942, German submarine U-107 had spotted a freighter just east of Cape Hatteras, NC when the American merchant ship, the SS Major Wheeler, came into view. The unarmed, unescorted steamer had departed Puerto Rico on the 3rd, bound for Philadelphia with a cargo of 4611 tons of sugar. The U-boat lost interest in the freighter and began stalking the Major Wheeler, eventually firing one torpedo which hit amidships, causing the ship to sink within two minutes.
There were 36 men on board, including the ship's Master, FRANK WALTER LOSEY; none survived.
