He graduated from Cedar Rapids' McKinley High School in 1938. John was associated with the auto parts business in Cedar Rapids for 40 years, having retired from Firstar Banks of Cedar Rapids.
John's interests included golf, hunting, bowling, photography and amateur radio. He was a member of St. Matthew's Catholic Church; an honorary life member of Council No. 5677 Knights of Columbus; Bowen General Assembly 4th Degree Knights of Columbus; a 50-year member of the NRA; and a member of the Izaak Walton League.
He is buried in the Garden of the Cross section of Cedar Memorial Park Cemetery.
Memorials can be made to St. Matthew's Catholic Church.
Helen Messenger Van Dyke of Newton is a first cousin. John's father and Helen's mother, Charlotte Emma Stochl were siblings.
