On May 10, 1919, John married Marie E. Douglas, daughter of George C. and Elizabeth (Crofter) Douglas in Marion, Iowa. They had one son, John, Jr. Jack and Marie were divorced by 1930. He never remarried.
Jack was a farmer all his life. He enjoyed his retirement years in a small house a stone's throw from the Cedar River just north of Solon that both he and the family called 'the shack.'
He shares a headstone with his younger brother, William Lester, aka "Sam."
