Charles' parents, Mormon converts, were transported to the United States from England in the late 1830s, leaving their son, Charles, in the care of his mother's relatives. They sent for Charles when he was twelve. He lived with them in Nauvoo, Illinois "through the winter", then took off on his own. Nothing more is known of him until the mid 1850s, when he married Clarissa Borden. They lived in Barada, Richardson Co. Nebraska. After her death in 1861, Charles married E.D. "Docia" Bryant.

Charles served from 22 Nov 1862 until 14 Dec 1863 with Company G. Second Nebraska Cavalry (Battle of Whitestone Hills). Enlistment data describes Charles as a farmer, 5'8" tall, fair complexion, blue eyes and fair hair. Charles also served as a private with Co. G 51st Regiment Missouri Infantry Volunteers. He injured his head, right shoulder and right leg in a train wreck while in the service.

E. D. died in 1872; Charles married Susan Annie Hoppes in 1873. Susan divorced Charles in 1893 and married John Jump.

After the divorce, Charles and his son, Ed, moved to the reservation near Bancroft, Nebraska. Charles received a Civil War Invalid Pension.

Eight additional children "died young": George, Francis, Peter, Jacob, Olive, Henry, Ellen, Lafayette
