A member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, he served as a missionary in Belgium and France for 30 months.
After he married Penelope Jones in 1959, Mr. Fitt enlisted in the Army, attended Officer's Candidate School, received a BA from Brigham Young University, and was commissioned as a Captain in the Army. He was the branch president in Germany.
Later in life, Mr. Fitt received a law degree from the University of Utah and worked as a public defender in Columbus, Georgia. There, he also served as bishop in the second ward. In 1979, he brought his family back to Utah, where he worked as an assistant district attorney for the city of Provo. He and his wife were divorced in 1991,
and Mr. Fitt later relocated to California, where he met and married Marlene.
Mr. Fitt spent his last years living with his wife in Wallace, where he landscaped their home. He enjoyed
playing the clarinet and saxophone and building model ships. He recently finished his masterpiece work of the Nova Scotia racing schooner the Bluenose, a favorite throughout his life.
Fluent in French and Russian, Mr. Fitt was currently teaching himself German and Italian to better understand some of the classic operas. He had a talent for furniture building and made many pieces for their home.
Mr. Fitt also served as a director of the Wallace Community Services District, and choir director for the San Andreas Ward of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
He is survived by wife Marlene von Ubin Kappesser Fitt; four brothers: fraternal twin Jon, Lowell, Stephen, and Richard; former wife Penelope Jones; children Jeff, Todd, Robb, MaryAnn, Matthew, Max, Sarah, and Amanda; and six grandchildren.
A funeral service was held at their church in Sutter Creek, and an inurnment was held later at the Sacramento
Valley National Cemetery in Dixon.
In lieu of flowers, the family prefers donations to be made to the San Joaquin Hospice.
