Died at Gettysburg-48th Virginia Infantry
DAVID A. JESSEE, son of Mr. Martin Jessee, departed this life at Gettysburg, Pa., on the 2d day of July, 1863, in the 31st year of his age, having fallen in that memorable battle, manfully striking for the cause of his county.
The deceased was a resident of Russell county, Va., volunteered in Capt. John H. Candler's Co. (K,) but new commanded by Capt. Charles Skinker, attached to the 48th Regt. Va. Infantry was with that Regt. when it first went into service, and endured all the hardships that that Regt. was called on to undergo in Northwestern Virginia, under Gen. Loring, embracing the memorable Cheat Mountain excursion, after which, the Regt. was removed to Winchester, where it was permanently attached to the Stone Wall Brigade, commanded by the immortal Gen. Jackson. He was a good soldier, ever ready, without a murmur, to respond to every demand made upon his services by his officers, had the good opinion of both officers and men, indeed was highly respected, and much beloved by all who knew him. He was a member of no church, bu was a young man of most excellent moral worth. The write of this was his comrade in arms, belonging to the same Co., and speaks just what he knows to be true, but anything I may say will not change his condition now, but would say to his relations and friends that he was so strictly moral, and his deportment so upright, that if he had told me, at any time, he was a christian, I should have believed it; but he has fallen at the feet of his last enemy, no more to respond to the tap of the drum, but to lay on that bloody field of Gettysburg until Gabriel shall sound the funeral knell of time, and bid the dead come forth to Judgment, and all I can say further is "peace to his ashes"
