Son of Job Smith (1820-1887) and Malissa Emmaline Hall (1823-1887) who died near Newport, Arkansas, while moving with sons to Missouri. Job is son of Joseph Hiram Garfield Smith, Sr. (b. 1800 South Carolina d. abt. 1875 Hall County, GA) and Dorcas Smith (Smith) (b. 1800 Easley, South Carolina d. 1879 Hall Co., GA). Hiram and Dorcas were founding members of Cool Springs Baptist Church, Bark Camp, Hall Co., GA, and it is believed that they are buried there in unmarked graves near their children.
