She was always known by her kin as "Nancy Ellen" or "Ellen." She was my Grandfather's older sister. To my Father, she was his much loved Aunt Ellen, married to his Uncle Dan Brewer.
The 1900 Census of Coffee County lists them as "William M. Brewer" and wife "Georgia E.," the 1910 & 1920 Census of Santa Rosa County, FL lists her as "Georgia A," and the 1940 Census lists her as "Georganne."
Her husband's Santa Rosa County, FL Death Certificate lists his wife as 'Elizabeth,' and she was still alive at that time. Although it does contain transcription errors, this too may indeed have been one of her given names, as her Mother was named Elizabeth. But his death certificate information may have been provided by someone else, not her.
It is possible that "Rebecca" was also one of her names, as her son Ed Brewer thought that was part of her name and it is a name often used by her mother's ancestral line. Long multiple given names were common among her Mother's family line, although determining and proving them after the passage of this much time is a problem. She has a sister with 5 known given names.
Ellen was the third daughter of James Allen Helms and his wife Elizabeth Ann (Adams), born after her father returned from the war. She was 17 and they were living in Covington County, AL near Rose Hill when he died from a rattlesnake bite. Then she and all her siblings had to pitch in to help their Mother rear the younger children and help bring in his crops from the field. She was well accustomed to hard work by the time she married Dan Brewer whose family lived nearby hers in Rose Hill, Covington County, AL and they began their own family in Covington County. Then they moved to Coffee County, AL where the Grandparents lived, and later, around 1905, she and her husband moved their family to Santa Rosa County, FL.
Dan and Ellen Brewer had at least 10 children.
