James Michael Mahaffey, born March 29, 1942 in Paris TX, to Lanita and John M Mahaffey, passed away on April 14 at his home in Garland. Mike attended Garland public schools and was a lifelong supporter of his beloved Garland High School Owls football team. His best friend and drinking buddy, Alvin Moore, an all-state quarterback at Garland, passed away last year. Mike also graduated from Tyler Junior College and attended UTA in Arlington, majoring in Business Administration. While in college, he started working part time in sales and construction with the development and homebuilding firm of Mahaffey-Wagner, in which his father was a founder. He was later employed by Ryan Mortgage Co. and Southern Trust and Mortgage as a mortgage loan representative. He also spent a year with the Louis Dorfman Development firm as a project manager. In 1967, he joined with his father to form Mahaffey Construction Company and started building FHA-VA homes in East Dallas, Garland, Mesquite and Richardson. At age 24, he became the youngest member of the Garland Planning Commission. In 1969, Mr. Mahaffey became the sole owner of the company which was then operating as Greenbriar Homes. After 8 years of successful operations, he sold a majority interest of Greenbriar to a group of French investors, remaining as President and CEO. During his 13 years as head of the company, Greenbriar built and sold more than 2000 homes. In 1981, Mike again formed his own company and began developing land, selling lots and engaging in some homebuilding. In 1978, Mr. Mahaffey was inducted as the 36th President of the Dallas Home and Apartment Builders Association, curretly known as , The Dallas Builders Association This was only the second time that a father and son had been elected to the Presidency of the association. His father was the 23rd President in 1965. He was the first Dallas Association builder to achieve "Purple Coat" status which recognized his recruitment of 194 new members before he became President. After completing his term, he was named to the National Association of Home Builders key Budget Committee for two-three year terms. In 1982, he was elected Secretary of the Texas Association of Builders (TAB) and became President of TAB in 1986. Mike was a Certified Graduate Builder, a Senior Life Director of the NAHB, a life Director of The Dallas Builders Association, President of the Mesquite Division and of the FHA-VA Division. He chaired the Association's Membership Committee and the popular Southwestern Builders Exposition and Homeshow. In 1987, He served on the economic Development Board of the City of Dallas. Survivors include his daughters Anna Moerdyk, Amy Martin and her husband Joseph, and Sara Moore, son, David Mahaffey and his wife Jaime, four grandchildren Patricia Sprague, Meredith Martin, David Martin, and Robert Moore. He is also survived by three younger brothers, Thomas and wife Sylvia of Washington DC, Joseph and wife, Cheryl of Scottsdale, AZ and John of Austin, TX and one sister, Mary Mahaffey of Austin, and 3 nieces and one nephew. Memorial Service will be 1:00 pm Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at St. Patrick Catholic Church, 9643 Ferndale Rd, Dallas, TX 75238. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Operation Finally Home (operationfinallyhome.org), the American Diabetes Association , or charity of your choice.
