Alice Elizabeth Thorn was the third child of Catherine "Kitty" (Raines) and Alexander "Alex" Young. According to her birth certificate, she was born at Viaduct. (It's unclear if Viaduct was a small community near Batesford, Victoria, or was, literally, a viaduct.) Her death certificate states that she was born at Lethbridge.

Alice had one half-sibling, Edwin Tasmin Raines, and 12 full siblings: Sarah Ann, Martha Jane, Alexander Thomas, David James, William Peter, Florence Valvina, Albert Edward, Ada Fanny, Arthur Lewis, Olive Millicent, Mary May, and Harry Leslie.

On 17 March 1886 she married Joseph Thorn at her parents home in Murmungee, Victoria. She was the mother of four children: Percival Joseph Bradlaugh, Herbert Alexander who died young, Silas Albert, and Herbert Alexander, who was given the same name as his deceased brother.

At the age of 84 she died at her home at 2 Eliza Street, Newport, Victoria. Causes of death were Myocardial Degeneration, Senility, and Chronic Nephritis. She was survived by three of her four children and their spouses, and several grandchildren. Her husband, Joseph, predeceased her.
