Records show that 22 year old Larkin Steven Tucker was working as a railroad flagman in Birmingham, AL when he enlisted there on 30 April 1898 as a private in Company L (Huery Guards, East Lake, Alabama) 1st Alabama Volunteer Infantry Regiment at the beginning of the Spanish-American War. At the time he was described as 5' 7", light blue eyes, auburn hair and ruddy complexion. The Volunteer Infantry was organized at Mobile, Alabama and was mustered into the federal service between May 9 and May 24, 1898. The First Alabama Volunteer Infantry served its term of service within the continental U.S. during the Spanish American War. The First Alabama Volunteer Infantry was mustered out of service on 31 October 1898 at Birmingham, AL and Larkin Tucker was honorably discharged.
The 1900 US Census of Ward 8, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 51 Y/O widowed N.E. McDaniel, operating a boarding house. One of the three boarders in the house was 24 Y/O Larkin Steven Tucker, a railroad conductor.
He married Jimmie Oden Farrar on 25 Sep 1902 at Avondale, Jefferson Co., AL.
Larkin's recorded post-military discharge work history shows he continued his interest in railroad employment. Railroad jobs were well paid, much sought after blue-collar jobs. By 1907 in Birmingham, Al, he worked as a "railroad switchman" for the "Frisco System". By 1920 he had achieved the position of "yard foreman" for the Frisco Railroad and advanced to "train conductor" by 1922. He continued railroad employment until his death in 1931. Larkin Tucker's 20 year Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen pin was preserved by his daughter, Bernice Enoree (Tucker) Murtishaw.

Also living in the household were their children: 4 Y/O Janie Rosalind Virginia Tucker and 3 Y/O Florence Monica Tucker.
Larkin's 18 Sep 1918 WWI Registration Card recorded him as 42 Y/O and a switchman for the Frisco Railroad. He and his wife, Jimmie Oden Tucker were living at 8113 18th St., Birmingham, AL.
The 1920 US Census of East Lake, Birmingham, Jefferson Co., AL enumerated the household of 45 Y/O Larkin Steven Tucker, a railroad switchman and his 34 Y/O wife Jimmie Oden (Farrar) Tucker. Aldo living in the household were their children: 15 Y/O Janie Rosalind Virginia Tucker; 12 Y/O Florence Monica Tucker and 4 Y/O Bernice Enoree Tucker. (The Tucker name in this census is mangled to read as "Micke")
