He was born Jan. 20, 1913, in Ligonier, the son of the late Hiram and Emma Wagner Burns.
He was a member of Derry First United Methodist Church. Bill was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, having served in the Pacific Theater. He was a 1932 graduate of Derry High School. Before he retired in 1977 after 44 years of service, he worked as a welder and boiler fireman for Derry Westinghouse. Bill was a proud member of the United Electrical Worker Union. After retirement, he enjoyed hunting, tinkering in his workshop, and spending lime with his beloved wife Anna at their camp in Erie County. He was also a rail buff and he and his wife took many steam excursions. He was a member of the National Railway Historical Society, the Lakeshore Railroad Society, Derry Rod & Gun Club, American Slovak Society of Bradenville, life member of the National Rifle Association and the Veterans of Foreign War.
Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife of 60 years, Anna Jane Irwin Burns; and a sister, Helen Cole. He is survived by his son, William R. Burns, of Derry; his loving grandson, Rhett C. Burns, of LaQuinta, Calif.; brothers-in-law, Jack Irwin, of Wilmot, Ohio, and Thomas Irwin, of Latrobe; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He will be sadly missed by his devoted caregiver, Rose Kosiba and husband, Don, of Latrobe; and his Jack Russell terriers, Scooter and Chloe, who provided much laughter and merriment in his final years.
