Thomas Loftus came to the West from County Mayo, Ireland, via Bury, Lancashire, England. Thomas was married to Bridget Mulderick and they had four children: Clara Bridget Loftus Hastings; William Joseph Loftus; Patrick Loftus; and Thomas L. Loftus. Thomas, Bridget, Mary F. (mother was Mary Higgens, Thomas' 1st wife who died shortly after Mary was born), Clara and William arrived in America March 1868 on the ship Erie. The family lived in Charlestown, MA until 1872. Patrick was born in Charlestown, MA. The family hired a wagon and traveled west to Denver. Upon arriving in Denver the railroad to Pueblo, CO was almost finished. When it was completed the Loftus family was one of the first to travel the Denver/Pueblo railroad to Pueblo. Once in Pueblo the family hired another wagon and traveled to the San Luis Valley, Thomas was born in Alamosa, CO; the family eventually settled in Durango. Mary and Clara married and moved to Silverton, CO where they raised their families and both ran very profitable businesses. The Loftus family helped build Durango and Silverton and became well known in the San Juan Country.
