Ciro Antonucci, 80, of North Belle Vernon, died Thursday, July 22, 2004, in UPMC-Mercy, Pittsburgh. A son of the late Cosimo and Divina Santoro Antonucci, he was born in Italy on March 3, 1924. He was a member of St. Sebastian Roman Catholic Church, American Legion Post 659, both of Belle Vernon, and a life member of Charleroi VFW Post 167. A U.S. Army veteran of World War II, Mr. Antonucci had resided in Belle Vernon for over 58 years and retired in the mid-80's from the Monessen Plant of Wheeling-Pittsburgh Steel Co. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Rosemarie Cefala Antonucci on Jan. 1, 1982; one granddaughter, Tama Michele Smith; and two sisters, Doris Allen and Maria Blassio.

In July 2013, the Congressional Gold Medal was awarded, collectively, to the First Special Service Force (FSSF) in recognition of its superior service during World War II. On February 3, 2015 surviving FSSF Veterans were in Washington DC to accept this momentous recognition on behalf of their fellow Forcemen who could not be there.
