Funeral services for John Marshall Black, 66, of Lufkin will be held Saturday, September 3, 2011 at 2:00 p.m. in the Cross Timbers Cowboy Church with Pastor Ford Adkins, Brother Wayne Roberson and Reverend Ross Black officiating. Graveside services with military honors will follow in the Whitehouse Cemetery.

Mr. Black was born October 2, 1944 in Alvin, Texas to the late Reverend Loranza "Curley" Black and Versie (Havard) Black, and died Wednesday, August 31, 2011 in a local hospital.

Mr. Black was a 1963 graduate of Lufkin High School. He served in the U.S. Air Force from 1964-1968. He then began a career in law enforcement with the Lufkin Police Department, where he worked from 1968-1970. Mr. Black graduated from Angelina College in 1971 and Sam Houston State University in 1975. He worked for the Sam Houston Police Department from 1974-1975, and in 1976 joined the Mesquite Police Department, where he retired as a Sergeant in 1992. In 1993 he began working for the Office of the Inspector General of the State of Texas, and retired from there in 2007. He was currently employed with Carroway Funeral Home.

Mr. Black was a great husband, father and grandfather. He loved trains, and always had a model train he would be working on. He never had a bad thing to say about anyone. Mr. Black was a member of the Cross Timbers Cowboy Church.

Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Linda Rae (McClendon) Black of Lufkin; children, Katherine Joann Futers and husband Jason of London, England, John Nealey Black and wife Angela of Hewitt and Nicole Rae Black and life partner Sophia Martineau of New Jersey; grandchildren, Dyllin and Ian Black of Hewitt and Toby and Rosie Futers of London, England; sisters and brothers-in-law, Jean and Reverend J.D. Wooten of Alto and Lorraine and Irvin DuBose of Beulah; brothers and sisters-in-law, Joe and Charlene (Hunter) Black of Lufkin and Reverend Ross and Brenda (Jenkins) Black of Central; and numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.

Pallbearers will be Mark DuBose, Steven DuBose, Davie DuBose, Clay DuBose, Kevin Black, Jason Futers, Jon Black and Dyllin Black.

The family will welcome friends and loved ones from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Friday evening at Carroway Funeral Home, and for one hour prior to the service on Saturday.
