Bio (summary from obit) Samuel Rankin Canon, son of James F and Mary Canon, was born in Uniontown, PA May 12, 1845. He moved with his parents to Iowa in 1857 and settled in Fremont which for over 55 years has been his home. Upon arrival his father purchased the Rankin hotel which he conducted until his death the following year. He assisted his mother in the conduct of the hotel for a number of years and finally took the management upon himself. In 1873 he formed a partnership in the mercantile business with J A Gunn. In 1892 the firm
established the bank of Canon and Gunn.

Mr Canon's marriage occurred Oct 7, 1880 when he was united to Miss Ida Mae English of this township. To this union 3 children were born: Harry E Canon of St Paul, MN; Mrs F P Schultze of Ft Dodge, IA and Dell A Canon of Des Moines,
IA. Besides the immediate family he leaves 5 sisters, Mrs Robert T Newell, Mrs D H Dinsmore and Sarah Canon of Fremont, Mrs J C Keith of Audubon and Mrs Franklyn Smith of Chariton, IA and 6 grandchildren. His parents, 1 brother Wm S Canon and
1 sister Miss Margaret Canon preceded him in death.

He was a member of the Baptist Church, Toleration Lodge No 236, A F & A M, Eastern Star Lodge, Masons and Odd Fellows
