She ran the Canon house hotel with the help of her son Samuel. She was known as "Grandma Canon" and the term was applied with a reverence that proved the esteem in which she was held. She was a devout Presbyterian and prominent in the erection of the Presbyterian church in Fremont. Sh was also one of the earliest postmasters of Fremont.

OBIT: Mary Junk was born on the 22 day of December 1805 in Fayette County, Pennsylvania of New Jersey covenanters and lived on a farm until she was married to James F Canon March 21, 1826 and she died March the 21 on the 76th anniversary of her marriage. She and her husband settled in Uniontown, PA where he was engaged in the hat business. They lived there until the latter part of 1857 when they removed to Iowa, arriving in Fremont May 9th 1857 where she has ever since made her home. Mr Canon died June the 20 1859 leaving her with a large family of girls and one son 14 years old, all of whom lived to maturity and became useful and honored citizens.
Grandma Canon was the mother of eleven children, the three oldest dying in infancy of that dread scourge scarlet fever within a period of 2 weeks. Margaret died in early womanhood, she was one of the bright teachers of Mahaska county. William S died in the prime of life, a successful and efficient druggist. The remaining six, namely Mary wife of J C Keith of Audubon, IA. Nancy C wife of R T Newell, Sarah E wife of Isaac Cox, Samuel R, Jane, widow of Jason Caves and Rachel wife of D H Dinsmore, all of Mahaska county. Her children were all at her bedside during her sickness and were present at her death. Mother Canon joined the Seceders or the United Presbyterian Church at Uniontown, PA in Oct 1832 retaining her membership until her removal to Iowa when she placed her membership with the Presbyterian church at Kirkville, Ia where she retained her membership until the organization of the Presbyterian church here which she assisted in organizing and also in the erection of the house of worship.
Mother Canon was a great reader of the Bible and church papers, one of which, the Presbyterian, she has taken continuously for 76 years.
She was charitable to a fault and unselfish as any mortal can be, never thinking of her own welfare but continuously of the welfare of others. No worthy person ever went hungry from her door.
The funeral services were held in the Presbyterian church, conducted by Rev. R T Chambers of Newton, assisted by Rev E Bodenham of the Baptist church. She was laid to rest in the Fremont Cemetery.
Those present from out of town to attend the funeral were Samuel Rankin and John Junk of Galesburg, Ill, Samuel Junk of Rio Iowa, J Harry Canon of Muscatine, Iowa, Mrs Mary Keith from Audubon, Iowa, Dan W Canon of Omaha, Nebraska, P R Swazy and wife, D Bradbury and wife and Mrs Shaw of Oskaloosa.
