Katherine (Sulzen) Grauel, daughter of Adolph and Susan (Klaus) Sulzen, was born August 19, 1860 at Lecompton, Kansas. She married William Grauel sometime around 1879 and they first appear together in the census of 1880 in Kanwaka, Douglas County, Kansas. Children born to this marriage were:

Josephine Cecilia, born Aug. 19, 1895
Kate's husband William Grauel died September 15, 1899, leaving her with five children still living at home. A note of condolence from the Order of Herman's Sons, post marked on the date of William's death, was sent to their lodge brother's widow, Kate. The original letter, written in old German script, is in my possession.
Life was not easy for Kate and her children. For a while they lived on the farm next to her brother Frederick Sulzen in Lecompton. One by one all of Kate's children, except for 14 year old Josephine, left home; and 1910 finds Kate living in her brother Frederick's household caring for their mother. Listed in Fred's household that year were: Fred (47); mother Susan (73); sister Kate (49) Kate's daughter Josephine (14); hired man Fred Pickens (16); and infant Frank Pickens (3 months). Fred and Frank Pickens were children of Kate's cousin Angela Klaus Pickens. Because of her cousin's illness and death, Kate took the infant Frank into her home to raise.
Sometime after Kate's mother died she also lived with her brother Theodore on his farm, but by 1930 she again lived with her brother Frederick. Also shown in Frederick's household at that time were Kate's daughter Agnes, Agnes's 4 daughters, and Frank Pickens age 20. It appears that Kate and her brother Frederick spent their entire lives caring for others.
My first memories of Gt. Grandma Kate were around 1950 when she and her two daughters Agnes and Susana Catherine (known as Lula) lived one block from our house in Lecompton, Kansas. At the age of 91, Kate passed away at home five days before Christmas of 1951. She rests beside her parents Adolph and Susan Sulzen at St. Peter's Cemetery in Big Springs, Kansas.
